Revisions, Revisions, REVISIONS!
And we’re back. I think the hardest thing to feel with when producing art is critiques. You put your effort into something and no matter what, there will always be something someone has to say about it. It’s good for progress, because sometimes you get stuck seeing an asset for too long that you start missing the smaller stuff. But sometimes, it just feels like the critics don’t know what they want from the asset and you make change after change to hear the same thing over again. I understand fully that this is all a part of the process, but when I follow the concept art to the letter, being told how “amazing” something looks only to have to go back and change almost every aspect of the asset it feels like there’s no trust there.
For example, the car from the last blog. I was given concept art and recreated it. Everyone gave the trophy of approval. However, as soon as we were given some much needed feedback on the assets not looking like they all belong, we all went back to the drawing board. The artists made some notes on their old concepts and we all went to work. Having yet again followed the new notes, this time I am given four to five different notes on what to change, just about the front end. One person wants it to be fatter, another wants it to be narrower, but they were all consistent in the fact it wasn’t cartoony enough. Upon reviewing it myself, I can agree some of the changes are subtle, and perhaps too subtle, but most of the changes they are asking for require me to redo the whole model. I will have to bring it up in our next team meeting but, it’s just frustrating to be told multiple different things with no clear and concise agreement on what the art direction for our work should be. In my opinion, I think it was a mistake to let multiple people make the concept art given that it’s all different and none of it looks cohesive. Our buildings don’t match the cars, don’t match the interior. It’s hard to see the vision when it’s muddy.
These blogs feel like I’m just ranting at this point. It’s meant to be a progress update but at this moment, I don’t have much progress to announce. I finished a bucket but the car revisions have been taking most of my time. Perhaps I should’ve have just put it to the side and worked on Madam Gator, but it’s all a learning process. Anyways, I should probably stop ranting and end it here. Pictures below.
