Blog Post #2: The Crew

So here we are again. Welcome back for another Gumbo blog, this time we’re talking about current progresses and teamwork. I always find it interesting working on group projects because you always can find different types of people in every group, like a cliche cast during a heist. You’ve got your fixers, these are the people who make sure everything is working and appoints who should be working on them. Next is the solo wizards, the people who just seem to always be doing magic off-screen because they show up the next day with new stuff every time and it makes you really wonder how they have all that time. After that, you’ve got your smooth operators, the ones that kind of seem like they’re coasting but when you ask what they’ve been working on, they casually show you an entire cityscape. But don’t get smooth operators and Solo wizards confused, they are very different in the way they present their work. Solo wizards are more flashy and showy with how they present. Smooth operators just chill until asked to do show something then blow your freaking mind. Then we have the mediator, the one who holds us all together, the one that manages the people aspect of the group. But overall, I think the team is coming together nicely. We’ve been chugging through the asset lists, nothings really screen ready but it’s off to a good start, in my humble opinion. It seems much more oiled since the first couple weeks. I have noticed that no one really wants to be the leader though. They always defer, defer, defer. And ever since the production plan review some people have become more communicative, which is nice, but others who were in the past, have quieted down. I personally, am not one for words (unless they’re written, of course) but for actions. I’d rather do first then talk about doing and planning to do and then finally do when everything has been planned down to the brass tacks. The bureaucracy sometimes waits down the creativity, but it’s only in minor circumstances and very rare so far.

As for my work, I recently began working on two different models. Theo’s Car and Madam Gators polygons. Theo’s car is interesting because we have this cartoon style, but the concept art is so realistic. Luckily, I’ve been granted some license to stylize the modeling aspect which is nice, but I’m somewhat worried that it won’t match the rest of the props. Only time will tell, and we can always fix it later. Gotta love that iterative process! As for Madam Gator, thank goodness our concept artists are amazing and did a full turnaround for each character. Otherwise, I’d have no freaking clue how to sculpt a flapper-esque gator lady that plays a clarinet. The progress pictures below are rough and only half of the model but, hey, it's progress!

Anyway, that’s all for today, I’ll see you in the next one. Same Gumbo time, on the same Gumbo channel!
